PCCSS Nutrition Beef Cow Video

We are excited to share an inspiring initiative that blends nutrition, education, agriculture, and real‑world learning in a way few districts can match.

Our Nutrition Director, Teena Carr, first transformed our schools through her work with the district hydrofarms—growing fresh lettuce and herbs for student meals while teaching plant science, sustainability, and the value of locally sourced food.

But Mrs. Carr didn’t stop there.

She expanded her vision with the District Beef Cattle Program, where three steer were responsibly raised right on school grounds. Once mature, the beef was processed and served in our cafeterias—bringing true farm‑to‑table nutrition directly to our students.

This program does more than provide fresher, higher‑quality meals. Students gain hands‑on experience in agriculture, animal care, food systems, and environmental stewardship. They learn discipline, responsibility, problem‑solving, and even explore career paths in agriculture, veterinary science, and environmental fields.

Through Mrs. Carr’s leadership and in partnership with our agricultural classes we’re building a powerful model of experiential learning. From hydroponic lettuce to locally raised beef, Putnam County Schools is committed to offering meaningful Ag Education from K–12 and helping students understand the world around them one project, one harvest, and one meal at a time.
