PCCSS & Albany State University sign a MOU
PCCSS and Albany State University entered into an agreement in 2018 to initiate a Program to introduce and give students an opportunity to spend learning time on a college campus. Mr Eric Arena, PCCSS Superintendent, and Dr. Raj Parikh, ASU Interim Provost, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Thursday, May 23, 2019, to continue and expand the relationship.
Most of PCCSS's students come through the Counselor's Office, targeting rising 9th and 10th graders, so that they might get an idea of what college is like, and if it's something they would like to do. It gives them an opportunity to sleep in a dormitory room for three nights, eat in a college cafeteria, go to some learning sessions with ASU Administrators, Deans and Professors. ASU designs learning experiences for our students including "How to save for college starting in Middle School", Art, Music, Spoken Word, Chemistry, Physics, Leadership, Citizenship, Physical Education, and a Campus Scavenger Hunt. Our students all have laptops and work on a project that is presented on Saturday at the closing Program/Luncheon. A bus brings parents/grandparents/guardians down to see the campus, have lunch, and see the student presentations. The students are able to enjoy the physical education facilities for exercise and some free time. This year, there will be some recreational league basketball games that they will be able to enjoy in the evening. We take PCCSS teachers/staff to assist the students in project development. We will also be doing a community service project at the Union Missionary Baptist Church on both Saturday mornings. It is a wonderful collaborative and learning experience for our students and the ASU folks.
