Two Putnam County basketball players made top honors at Sunday's region coaches meeting for regular season play. GHSA 4-AA basketball tournament being held this week at Morgan County High School.
Senior point guards Nick Burke and Ta'Keirra "K." Gibbs were both recognized with Player of the Year award announcements by the GHSA 4-AA coaches. The coaches vote at the end of regular season within each sport to choose the most outstanding players. Stuck for a Buck
PCES Students take Advantage of Stuck for a Buck Day.
Monday PCES students began collecting pennies, Tuesday was nickel day, Wednesday they collected dimes, and Thursday was quarter day. But they REALLY enjoyed Friday which was Stuck for a Buck Day. Students could buy strips of duck tape for $1.00 and use them to tape Mr. Braizel and Mrs. Rowland to the wall. All proceeds go to the Lukemia and Lymphoma Society.
PCHS Media Center Announces New Extended Hours and FREE Computer Classes
The Media Center at PCHS will begin an extended hours schedule on Tuesday, January 24. It will be open to both students and the Putnam County community until 7:00 p.m. on selected days!
You will have access to our computer lab and print resources and a school representative will be available as an additional resource if you need to find information. The following is a list of Spring semester days that the Media Center at PCHS will be open until 7:00 p.m.:

March 6 May 8
March 20 May 15
April 10
The Media Center will be open on select nights for anyone interested in learning more about technology. Hands-on learning will be available in the computer lab for students and community members and classes are FREE! The following dates and classes are available Spring 2012:
February 21- Excel Part II-Budgeting and Finance
March 20- Popping PowerPoint Presentations
April 10 - Using Publisher to Create Photo Documents

The SGAs selected projects and awarded funds for innovation grants to support research in effective instructional practices. All selected projects will be presented for review in June during an Instructional Practices Showcase.
The following grants were awarded:
Putnam County Primary: Mandy Stanford and Jennifer Puckett, G.I.V.E. Get Involved Volunteer with our Eagles", will create a program to develop opportunities for parents and community volunteers to get involved with PCPS classrooms by reading or practicing sight words and math facts. The award is $10,000 which is primarily used for iPads.
Putnam County Elementary: Cheryl McMichael, Reading Comprehension Project, an after school program for low achieving 5th grade students through project driven and interactive activities.
The award is $5,700 which is primarily in salaries and supplies for staff involved.
Putnam County Middle: Mary Sue McMichael, NSpire Calculators, using graphing calculators to engage students in math concepts and skills. The award is $4,500 primarily for NSpire calculators.
Putnam County Middle: Patricia Hurt, Handheld Library, Using kindles and e-readers to improve students' ability to analyze and interpret text. The award is $4,500 primarily for Kindles and training.
Putnam County Middle: Christina Edwards, iPad Lab, Providing iPads to give students an interactive learning environment. The award is $1,000 for the purchase of iPad software.
Putnam County High: Becky Nipper, Digital Learning, Using e-readers and iPads with multimedia software to incorporate technology skills into ELA and Social Studies lesson plans. The award is $5,000 for the purchase of equipment.
A Grant from DonorsChoose.org
Cammie Branan, fifth grade teacher at Putnam County Elementary School, received funding for a 3-way classroom microscope, digital microscope and a set of prepared slides for her students. The funding came from a web site called DonorsChoose.org The teacher registers on the web site and provides a description of the project and then donors log in and make donations to the project. Ms. Branan submitted her project on September 13, 2011 and received funding through donations by January 1, 2012.
The digital microscope will plug into a computer and project the image onto the Promethean Board. It will make it possible for all students to benefit from the opportunity to see and discuss cells and microorganisms.
Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation
Mr. Brian Avery, Band Director at PCMS, has been awarded the National Foundation Awards Grant to Outstanding Public School Music Programs. The PCMS music program was found to be a worthwhile investment, allowing more students to be able to plan and experience the benefits of music education.
The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation donates new and refurbished musical instruments to schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters the many benefits of music education, by helping them to be better students and inspire creativity and expression through playing music.
The grant will provide the following instruments, with a total value of $14,500. - 4 refurbished alto saxophones
- 1 refurbished tenor saxophone
- 6 new 4/4 violins
- 1 new 16" viola
- 1 refurbished 16" viola
- 1 new 4/4 cello
- 4 refurbished clarinets
- 1 new clarinet
- 2 new flutes
- 2 new concert snare drums with stands

Educator Scholarships
This year, the GRE Foundation, under the auspices of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, will be awarding twelve $500.00 grants/scholarships to twelve educators to use in a manner most suited to the individual's need in pursing advanced certification, or while adding a field. Any educator who is certified and employed in Georgia, Pre-K through 12, is eligible to apply for the scholarship. You can find the application at Educator Scholarships

Chloe Manville and her Family
The Superintendent's Student of the Month is Chloe Manville.
Chloe is a kindergarten student at Putnam County Primary School. She was recommended by her teachers, Kim McLaulin and Lauren Brown.
Chloe is an excellent student and is a joy to teach. She not only excels academically but is also very treasured by her classmates. Chloe always puts one hundred percent effort into every task that she completes. She was the Principal’s Student of the Month for the month of October. She has only missed 3 days of school, and she is never late or tardy. Chloe is a wonderful peer tutor because she truly helps the children with the task. She enjoys “teaching” the children and is very patient as a peer tutor.
Outside of school, Chloe participates in many activities and organizations. She attends the First Baptist Church in Eatonton where she participates in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and she is also a member of Daisy Troop 60056. Chloe participates with her family in a program that allows them to foster puppies and kittens through the Oconee Regional Humane Society. They give the animals a temporary home. According to Chloe’s mother, she participates in every step of the process from going to vet visits to giving medication to feeding, grooming, and training. Chloe’s family has saved 51 puppies and 14 kittens in the past 3 years.
Her teachers commented, "She is very well-behaved and is kind to everyone. Simply put, she just has such a kind and loving spirit. Chloe fills our bucket everyday!"
2012 Page Star Student
We are pleased to announce our 2012 PAGE STAR student: Akila D. Young.
Akila, the daughter of Gary and Pam Young of Eatonton, selected her elementary school teacher Mrs. Nancy Marshall, as her STAR teacher. For the past two years, she has been in the Advanced Academy of Georgia, an early-entrance, residential program housed at the University of West Georgia. In the Academy, junior and senior high school students move away from home to take a full-time college course load.
After graduation from PCHS she will double major in Early Childhood Education and Social Work with a minor in Psychology. She has been accepted to the University of GA, Georgia State, Oglethorpe University ,Clemson University, The University of Alabama, and The University of West Florida. After college, she plans to become a kindergarten teacher here in Putnam County and open a human resources management building to help citizens with financial or personal issues become better, more productive members of society.
Akila is also a Finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship program which is a part of the National Merit Scholarship Program. She was selected as a finalist from the 1600 semifinalist selected nationwide. Scholarship winners from across the nation will be named in late February. Volunteers for Life Source
Twenty seven students and five teachers were recognized at the Putnam County Board of Education meeting on January 23, 2012 for their work with the Food Distribution Program through Life Source.

Mr. Boyd Dennard, Bus Driver for Putnam County School system, receives his School Bus Trainer/Instructor certificate, issued by the State Department of Education. Mr. Dennard is now one of 8 driver/instructors in the Putnam County system. These driver/instructors put in many extra hours to achieve this certification.

Four students from PCHS signed with Colleges this week and received full scholarships. Nick Burke signed with University of West Georgia, Marteze Waller signed with Fresno State, Tyree Clemons signed with Tuskegee University and Charleston Reid signed with University of West Georgia. Putnam County is very proud of these students and their accomplishments. We wish you the best and look forward to hearing of the great things to come.

On February 1, 2012, eighteen Putnam County High School SkillsUSA members traveled to the capital to be advocates for Career and Technical Education and SkillsUSA. During the day, students enjoyed a variety of activities that included meeting with legislators, viewing the House and Senate from the gallery area, touring the Capitol, and meeting with State Representative Randy Nix and GACTE Executive Director Matthew Gambill. The students learned about upcoming legislation like HB 186 that directly impacts high school students and their career pathways. To finish off the day, the students had the opportunity to take a picture with the SkillsUSA Delegation and Governor Nathan Deal. It was a great experience for the students to see our Government in action. The students' attendance was a powerful statement to the Legislature of the importance of Career and Technical Education and SkillsUSA!
